Andropause (male menopause)

A male menopause for men?  Yes it is called andropause.  Andropause affects all men – no one escapes it.  We are seeing a significant increase in younger men – age  32 to 35 (see article from Men’s Health).  The cause is a decline in hormones--primarily testosterone, thyroid, growth hormone and DHEA that normally starts about age 25 to 27.   Replacing these hormones to healthier levels can and will reverse symptoms starting in about a week.
Note:  We have a network of well trained doctors across the country who will manage your program.

Symptoms include:

  • Decreased mental quickness and sharpness
  • Decreased energy, strength and endurance
  • Less desire for activity and exercise
  • Decreased muscle and increased body fat
  • Mild to moderate depression and irritability
  • Depression and/or loss of eagerness and enthusiasm for daily life
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Decreased sexual function and/or sensitivity

Replacing hormones, if done correctly, safe and effective and you are never too old. We have men in their 80's who have found a new life.

So why do most men not know about andropause? Here are several reasons:

  1. It has only been recently that andropause has received attention and recognition.
  2. Men believe they do not need help in being a man.
  3. Men do not talk about such things - it is not the manly thing to do.
Our male patients talk openly about their needs. But each of them would also admit that they had difficulty making that first call.  Male pride is often a man's greatest strength and his greatest weakness.

Andropause treatment
  • Testosterone, can be replaced by twice weekly self administered injections or twice daily topical cream.
  • DHEA and thyroid are taken by pill
  • HGH is by daily injection with a very small needle

What to expect

Let's use an example of replacing only testosterone, thyroid and DHEA along with the patient agreeing to practice good lifestyle of diet, exercise and controlling stress.

What this gentleman can expect:

  • In the first two weeks he will notice an increase in mental quickness and a general improved enthusiasm for daily life - a depression that he did not know he had begins to lift.  He will wake in the morning with a renewed zest for life.
  • After about two to three weeks he will notice more energy and a desire to be more active.
  • At three to four weeks there is an increase in sex drive demonstrated by night dreams, spontaneous erections and an overall increased interest in sex.
  • If the man is in fact more active, and depending on the nature of that activity, he can expect a further improvement in energy, endurance, muscle tone and reduced fat. Remember the energy, enthusiasm for life and sex drive at age 25 to 30? That is what you can expect if you get your hormones to a healthy level and practice good lifestyle habits.
